The are several reasons
for this:
- The parish clerks
making registrations in the church register of a new-born Kjærulf quite often misspelled the
Kjærulf name. The parish clerks were not always the brightest of people and once a new-born
Kjærulf had been
entered into the church register, the name could not easily be changed.
- When Kjærulfs
immigrated to a new country it was often not possible to keep the name with
the funny letter "æ" and immigration officers decided on the new
local version
- For practical reasons
in a foreign country Kjærulfs adapted their name to the local language as much as
possible.
- Some Kjærulfs may
have liked to give the name a little twist to be different from the other family
members.
